Standards/Curriculum
Standards are a measure of what students should know and be able to do at the end of each school year. The
Common Core Library
gives more details on the
New York State Education Department
’s adoption of the Common Core Learning Standards. The Common Core was drafted in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and educational experts, and defines what students need to know and be able to do in order to be college and career ready. In the 2012–13 school year, students will complete two mathematics units that align with the Common Core. The
standards for mathematics
focus on fewer topics to allow deeper understanding of grade-specific work, complex higher-level concepts, and mathematical models in the upper grades.
A curriculum is a set of materials and exercises that helps students to reach these standards by the end of the year. Schools in New York City are empowered to choose the math curriculum that best supports the growth of their students; teachers and principals can find examples of Common Core-aligned tasks and instructional supports on
EngageNY
and the
Common Core Library
