Elementary and Middle School

Schools are Invited to Enroll in the New York City Spelling Bee Competition

Have you heard all the Buzz? It’s time to enroll your school in the 2024-25 New York City Spelling Bee! ALL schools—public, charter, private, parochial, and homeschool—are invited to sign up by Thursday, October 31, for a chance to have your student be this year’s champion. The enrollment fee is $185, and Scripps does NOT accept purchase orders; pay by credit card or check. Enrollments submitted after the October 31 deadline will NOT be accepted. Please note the extended deadline on the Scripps website does not apply to New York City schools. During enrollment, schools will be asked to identify a spelling bee coordinator. In addition to other tasks that will be communicated after enrollment, spelling bee coordinators will receive access to  www.spellingbee.com which will provide schools with resources for their spelling bee program. Only students in grades 4-8 are eligible to participate in the New York City Spelling Bee, and ALL schools must complete their school's spelling bee by Wednesday, November 27. For more information, visit www.spellingbee.com. The CUNY Advanced Science Research Center in Harlem is a world-leading center of scientific excellence that elevates STEM inquiry and education at CUNY and beyond. Field trips are a FREE two-hour experience and center around The IlluminationSpace; an immersive learning environment featuring interactive, motion sensing exhibitions highlighting the fundamentals of each research initiative at the ASRC. Facilitators help guide students through the exhibits and lead conversations on research in our everyday lives. A guest scientist joins us for a career talk and tour of their lab. The Morgan Library & Museum Walton Ford: Birds and Beasts of the Studio Teen Tour and Workshop

Join artist Walton Ford for an exclusive FREE tour of his exhibition  Walton Ford: Birds and Beasts of the Studio at The Morgan Library & Museum, followed by a watercolor workshop led by the artist. Hear directly from Ford about his work and process, and be inspired to create your own sketches. No experience required and all art materials are included. This program runs from 4:30-6pm and is open to youth 13–18 years old and their caregivers.  Advance registration required on the Morgan website.

Student Historian Internship at the New-York Historical Society

The New-York Historical Society (N-YHS) is now accepting applications from students in grades 10–12 for the 2024-25 academic year cohort of the Student Historian Internship  Student Historian Internship Program. Student Historians use the resources of N-YHS to conduct in-depth research and share their scholarship through the production of creative digital projects that serve as public educational resources. Interns meet with professional staff to learn about the museum, library, digital humanities, and history fields, while working collaboratively with fellow students to develop their historical thinking, communication, and digital media skills. All interns receive a $700 stipend upon successful completion of the internship. Participation in this program can be used to fulfill the extracurricular requirement for the New York State Education Department’s Seal of Civic Readiness. Learn more and apply on the New York  New York Historical Society website Society website.

School of Interactive Arts FREE Game Design After School

Make your own video game at the School of Interactive Arts (SIA)! At SIA's FREE after-school program, provided by nonprofit Urban Arts, students learn coding, digital art, animation, music, and storytelling through game development. Classes meet weekday afternoons or on Saturdays. SIA offers in-person courses at their learning lab near Union Square as well as a virtual class on Discord. Students entering grades 9–11 in September are eligible to apply. Join the movement for climate action and apply for the Office of Energy & Sustainability’s Youth Leadership Council. Student members will gain skills to lead climate action in their schools and communities. They’ll build an inclusive network of students across the city, earn community service hours, take sustainability field trips, and plan the 2025 Youth Climate Summit. Participants will gain valuable leadership experience while making a difference in our city and schools. The Youth Leadership Council meets monthly after school. FREE GuggTeens Collaborative at the Guggenheim Museum

The GuggTeens Collaborative is a FREE program to amplify local teen voices at the museum and beyond! From November to May, the annual cohort will learn about museum operations across a variety of departments and from a variety of perspectives. In a supportive and creative space, teens will work in groups to explore how museums and contemporary art intersect with the topics most important to them. Participants will produce experiences for fellow teens, while cultivating the personal and professional skills to help them prepare for their young adult lives. There are no prerequisites for this program and all teens are encouraged to apply. Snacks and MetroCards are provided for all in-person meetings, and participants who successfully complete the program receive a stipend. Learn more and apply online.

BookMatch Teen internship program

Teens in grades 9–12 are invited to apply for Brooklyn Public Library's (BPL) BookMatch Teen internship. Participants attend regular meetings at BPL Central Library to receive training in readers’ advisory and learn about related careers in librarianship, publishing, and writing. Teens will use their training to offer a peer book recommendation service, creating personalized booklists for fellow teens via email and at live events. Welcome Back to School with the FREE “Queering New York” Video Series

Learn LGBTQ history through sites in New York City by exploring “Queering New York.” This fun and informative FREE video series features 20 videos, each under seven minutes, that can be viewed on your computer or smart phone. Each video, focused on sites connected to a person, group, or event, includes such important sites as the James Baldwin Residence, Transy House, Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop, Alice Austen & Gertrude Tate Residence, Lorraine Hansberry Residence, and Gay Activists Alliance Firehouse. The videos allow students to explore LGBTQ historic sites on topics related to classroom studies, including humanities and social studies.
