The Academy for Educational Development (AED) believes that with both challenging work and appropriate support, young adolescents can soar in school. This requires both a clear focus on the characteristics of young adolescents and the development of academically challenging and supportive schools and classrooms.
AED guides school leadership teams — administrators, teachers, and others — in improving school organization and instruction by (1) making smart use of data and reviews of student work; (2) understanding adolescent development and its implications for teaching and learning; (3) creating small learning communities and teacher teams; (4) building collaborative approaches to leadership, parent and community engagement, and support for students; and (5) embedding teachers’ professional development in the ongoing work of the school and in the common work of clusters of schools.
