School Leadership

The DOE is committed to the development and support of new, aspiring, and experienced school leaders. It is our goal to ensure that leaders of our system enhance their capacity, and that we continuously identify aspiring leaders who demonstrate commitment, innovation, and a relentless pursuit to meet the social and academic needs of our students.

The programs listed below provide professional development experiences and opportunities for new, aspiring, and experienced school leaders.

Opportunities for Aspiring Principals

Advanced Leadership Program for Assistant Principals (ALPAP) Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) Targets assistant principals who demonstrate a readiness to become principals and explore the complex nature of decision-making and authentic leadership 1 year The application process is currently open and closes on April 30, 2013 Certificate of completion
Leaders in Education Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) Develops individuals who demonstrate leadership capacity and readiness to take on school leadership positions in their existing school environments 1 year, including part time residency at home school The application process closed on January 31, 2013 School Building Leader (SBL) certification

New Leaders (NL) Aspiring Principals Program (APP) Focuses on leaders interested in ensuring high academic achievement for all children, particularly students in poverty and students of color 1 year, including full time residency at host school The application process closed on February 14, 2013 School Building Leader (SBL) certification
NYC Leadership Academy (NYCLA) - NYCDOE Leadership Advancement Program (LAP) Innovative School Building Leader (SBL) certification program with intense focus on preparing teacher leaders, who currently serve in school-based leadership roles, to become school administrators 2 years, including part time residency  The application process closed on April 3, 2013 School Building Leader (SBL) certification
NYC Leadership Academy (NYCLA ) Aspiring Principals Program (APP) Develops and supports individuals with some leadership experience to successfully lead low-performing schools through teamwork, simulated school projects, and a year-long principal internship 1 year, including full time residency at host school The application process closed on March 22, 2013 School Building Leader (SBL) certification (if required)

New School Intensive (NSI) Supports new school principals in fully realizing the vision of opening a new school 6 months The Office of New Schools conducts the design & development application process twice a year: September - December, and February - June
School-Based Intermediate Supervisors Institute (SBISI) Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) Builds, expands, and enhances fundamental school leadership skills and knowledge through a wide variety of “nuts and bolts” strategies, engagement in critical thinking scenarios, and exploration of educational leadership-related literature. 2 years The application process opens May 2013
Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) Continued professional development for all members of Council of School Supervisors & Administrators (CSA) on a variety of relevant topics through two channels:

Opportunities for Current Principals

Leaders In Education Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) Mentor Principal Endorses and supports the LEAP apprentice in their home school environment: mentor principals observe, coach, assess, and provide feedback 1 year The application process closed on January 31, 2013
Mentoring Excellence Initiative Mentor Principal Focuses on the opportunity for talented principals to support aspiring principals through the successful development of a new school 1 year The application process began with a letter of intent in March and closes in the summer of 2013
New York City Leadership Academy (NYCLA) Aspiring Principals Program (APP) Mentor Principal Supports the leadership development of aspiring principals; mentor principals observe, coach, assess, and provide feedback 1 year Rolling admissions process
School Leaders Network (SLN) Provides a research-based program model to build principal leadership; oppprtunity to build a sense of community within the network, reflect on leadership, and  get feedback on action strategies to improve schools and student outcomes Yearly, renewable membership On going; cohorts begin in September and new members are accepted through December of each year
