Center for Educational Innovation Public Education Association

Overview

At CEI-PEA, experience has taught us that the school is the center of change and that no two schools are alike.  Therefore, rather than impose one model of curriculum and instruction on all schools, we customize the services we provide to schools based on the vision and mission of each school.

Our network teams and our deep pool of consultants have decades of experience in creating and running successful public schools in NYC.  In addition to staff who have been principals, assistant superintendents and superintendents, we have specialists in budget, scheduling, special education, ELL, elementary, middle, and high school instructional practices, differentiated instruction and other areas.  We have worked with New York City public schools as well as  schools across the country, for more than two decades.

Our first step is to help principals to define and then refine the school’s vision.  We then create a Needs Assessment in cooperation with the principal and the school leadership team (SLT).  Based on that assessment, we work with the principal to establish the support priorities that CEI-PEA will provide.  While our network teams provide most of the support to schools, we have specialists who work across networks to provide support in areas such as those mentioned above.

How We Support Schools

Each of our networks is supported by a Network Leader, an achievement specialist and a supervisory support specialist. Full-time staff members are able to call upon the expertise of a team of experienced educators to address any issues that may arise in a school.  Our current networks range in size from 18-23 schools, with one smaller network that we expect will grow to full size next year.

In addition to our full-time staff, we provide schools with designated hours of consultant services.  Schools can choose from among more than 50 consultants who have expertise in all areas of school life.

Instructional Support

The network team meets with each principal to determine instructional priorities.  The accountability specialist works with the SLT and the school’s data specialist to analyze data and create instructional objectives.  Our Special Education Director and ELL Director consult directly with the principal and SLT and provide direct services to teachers.  In addition, we have specialists in differentiated instruction who provide professional development to a school’s  faculty and coaching for individual teachers.

Special Needs Services

Within our network teams are people who have had successful careers in special education, working with English Language learners, and working with students who are at-risk for a variety of reasons.  They will work with principals, SLTs, coaches, and teachers to develop and refine school-wide instructional approaches.  Our team of consultants is available to provide even more intensive work in any of these areas.

Youth Development Support

Our team also includes individuals with years of experience addressing issues around attendance, gangs, and student school engagement in general.  We will work with schools to create and implement attendance plans, anti-gang programs, and community service programs.  We also create after-school programs in many of our schools that provide students with cultural experiences and academic support.  Many of our schools take part in a program that sends students to the theater and concerts as part of  the school day,.

CEI-PEA currently provides support for schools in all five boroughs, distributed across grades in the following way:

  • 29 elementary schools

  • 32 middle schools

  • 6 high schools

  • 4 K-8 schools

These schools vary in philosophy, instructional approach, and stage of development.  Serving a very diverse group of schools, CEI-PEA had the highest rating of any SSO on last year’s school Quality Reviews.  We find that our organization works well with any school that wants to take full advantage of its empowerment.  We do not work well with schools that prefer to have a philosophy, instructional program, or school design imposed on them from the outside.

Feedback from Principals

In the most recent Principal Satisfaction Survey, 96% of principals were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with our network leaders.

Below are quotes from some of our principals reflecting our relationship with them:

“When I shop at a department store, I walk around the entire store looking for something that will fit.  If I go to a boutique, I sit in a room and they bring the clothes to me because they know what I need.  CEI is like the boutique.  They know what I need and they can provide it.” Annette Kunin, Principal Q169

“Having CEI in my corner is like always having the Verizon Network watching over you.  They truly are a school’s best ally!” Andrea  Cyprys  Principal MS 337X“CEIPEA is there when you need them, and not there when you don't need them.” Janet Heller, Principal  MS 324M
