Course Description: Two half-day workshops on Big Ideas for Managing Differentiated Instruction and Putting Fluency in Perspective, presented by Jan Hasbrouck, author and educational researcher. The morning session focuses on differentiation: increasing diversity in our classrooms has created an interest in providing multi-tiered differentiated instruction that effectively meets the needs of every student. However, teachers and administrators report they have received little training on how to organize and manage whole class and small group instruction. This session provides some proven-effective methods for how to set up classrooms so instruction can be differentiated. The afternoon session on reading fluency presents a summary of research on the role of fluency in reading procedures and a description of a systematic, explicit, and effective strategy  to improve the reading fluency of all students.
