To encourage sustained physical activity among our students, the Office of Fitness & Health Education developed the C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports & Fitness League as an outgrowth of our physical education curriculum. In approximately 1,000 programs in 200 middle schools, the C.H.A.M.P.S. league offers additional opportunities for students, regardless of athletic ability, to engage in a wide variety of physical activities, and to encourage these students to find activities that they enjoy and can participate in for life.

The program promotes health-related fitness and sports skills that can be maintained long after school days are over. Additional goals include improving student self esteem, increasing students’ sense of school-connectedness (a protective factor for discouraging health-risk behaviors), and affording further opportunities for parental involvement.

Basketball programs are now available in the spring season and with the support of Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation we will be able to create over 100 boys basketball teams and over 60 girls basketball teams. Besides hosting the CHAMPS Middle School Basketball League, there are over 30 Developmental basketball programs, concentrating on skill development, knowledge of the game and fitness.  The season will include pre-season and in-season teacher-coach training workshops.  These programs will emphasize the building-blocks approach in skills progression and game playing, with an equal focus on fun and fitness.  A three-part series will be available for teacher-coaches and a mentoring/residency option will be available to developmental programs.
