CHAMPS is an initiative of the New York City Department of Education that offers safe and fun after-school physical activities for middle school students. The name CHAMPS derives from the initials of the values that define our participants: Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated and Positive Students.
Childhood obesity is a serious concern in the United States and in New York City. Obesity increases a child's risk of developing potentially lifelong health problems like diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as heart disease and cancer during adulthood. Physical activity has many health benefits, including preventing obesity and maintaining a healthy weight. In addition, research suggests that students who exercise and keep themselves at a healthy weight tend to do better in school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day.
Participating in CHAMPS can help students stay active and find fun ways to stay fit that they can continue beyond middle school. From traditional sports such as basketball and tennis, to less conventional fitness activities like dance and tai-chi, we believe that there is a physical activity suitable for every child, regardless of athletic ability. CHAMPS activities take place outside of school hours in DOE-approved gyms and parks and are supervised by qualified teacher-coaches.
Help your child stay healthy
Families play a vital role in educating children about the importance of healthy behavior, including eating well and exercising. The manual Help Your Kids Reach A Healthy Weight, created by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, provides helpful and easy tips to promote wellness at home.
