Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports Training
To ensure the health and safety of our students who participate in CHAMPS programs, all teacher-coaches need to be certified in concussion management training on a biennial basis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created a free online course: Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports that instructs coaches on how to recognize the symptoms of mild traumatic brain injuries and also how to monitor and seek proper medical treatment for students who suffer from mild traumatic brain injuries.
This online training course is required by the New York State Education Department.
Teacher-coaches for the Fall 2012 season must be certified on or before November 7, 2012. Teacher-coaches for Winter and Spring 2013, and all subsequent seasons, cannot begin a program unless the teacher-coach's Concussion in Youth Sports certification is current and must not expire prior to the end of the season in which the teacher-coach is scheduled to work. It is the principal's responsibility to ensure that the teacher-coach has necessary, up-to-date certification. If the teacher-coach does not have a current Concussion in Youth Sports certification, then the CHAMPS program will be cancelled.
