At all grade levels, school librarians help students grow as individuals by fostering a love of reading and learning and teach students the critical thinking, technology, and literacy skills to ask good questions and investigate the answers. They offer equitable access to resources and technology; and help students make sense of the information they find to develop new understandings. School libraries help students develop information skills so that after graduation they can enter the workforce or go to college armed with the skills of learning and inquiry that they will need to be successful. These skills are built continuously from kindergarten to 12th grade through library instruction, and are aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards.

Empire State Information Fluency Continuum provides a K-12 framework for the instructional aspects of a library program. Citizenship in the Digital Age contains sample lessons from grades 1 to 12 in the areas of responsibility and online safety. The lessons are aligned to the NYC Information Fluency Continuum and Common Core Learning Standards. It was supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services
The Staff Social Media Guidelines recommend practices for professional social media communication between DOE employees, as well as social media communication between DOE employees and their students.
