Professional Development Opportunities

ESC offers single day professional development on the Chancellor’s Conference Days and multi-day series throughout the year. ESC professional development offerings provide teachers with hands-on experiences that demonstrate how experimental science can be integrated into instruction as a true extension of the classroom. .

Teaching Inquiry Based Science in the Elementary Classroom

Through a series of hands-on activities, classroom teachers will participate in the inquiry process to develop their own ideas for teaching inquiry-based science. During this multi-day program, teachers will work with easy to use kits that enhance science instruction and will identify ways to implement these activities and practices to foster natural student curiosity and a desire to explore. Teachers will examine the standards to effectively integrate science content and practice standards with the Common Core Learning Standards. There is no cost for this program and space is limited.

Wildlife Forensics

The use of molecular markers to help monitor the commercial trade of wildlife and protect endangered species represents a growing area of research in science. This five-day teacher professional development institute provides teachers with an opportunity to learn about conservation genetics and teaching strategies for using DNA as a tool to protect endangered species. Participants will learn to prepare DNA samples, run labs and analyze the results. Following the institute, teachers will have an opportunity to borrow a portable DNA lab to use in their own classroom with their students. There is no cost for this program and space is limited.
