Plan Your Visit

If you are coming for a Challenger Space Mission...

  • About a week before your visit…
A staff member from NYCCSSE will visit your school to do the Pre-Mission Lesson with your students to introduce them to their jobs as astronauts and get them excited about their visit. If we are not able to visit your school due to scheduling constraints, we will send you the Pre-Mission Lesson materials so you can facilitate the lesson prior to your visit to the Center.
  • A few days before your visit…
      • Complete the Crew Manifest and nametags based on students’ job applications. (Please write students’ names in black marker.)
      • Make sure you have satisfied the 1:10 chaperone to student ratio.
      • Make sure you have travel directions printed out. Our location is a little tricky so be sure the bus driver has clear directions.
  • On the day of your visit…
      • Bring your crew manifest.
      • Bring an attendance list for each class.
      • Make sure students are wearing their nametags and know their job assignments.
      • If you plan to eat here, have students bring their lunches. (We will store them for you.) Please note: Students will not be able to purchase food at the Center.
      • Call when you are on your way (or before boarding the subway).
      • Bring any Pre-Mission Lesson materials that were loaned to you.
      • Bring payment if it was not previously submitted (school check or FAMIS). We do not accept cash or credit cards.

Special Needs (12:1 and 12:1:1)

NYCCSSE is an experiential, hands-on learning center and our programs are adaptable to most special needs populations. Our facility is wheelchair accessible. It should be noted that some of our programs do have bright flashing lights and loud sounds.

NYCCSSE runs an Astronaut Training Program and an Aviation Training Program specifically geared towards 12:1 and 12:1:1 populations. Please contact Peter Giles at pgiles@schools.nyc.gov or 212-608-6164 (ext. 111) for more information.
