Course Description:  This fall every New York City public school will receive a National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America set of 40 notable American works of art.  This three-day institute is for teacher teams from individual schools to learn how to use these masterpieces to teach history and civics, helping students connect to the people, places, events and ideas that shaped our nation.  We suggest that, when possible, teams of teachers from an individual school register for this institute.  If a team is not available, individual registrants may participate.

Course Description:
As part of the Campaign for Middle School Success, the DOE is pleased to partner with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project to offer the Silk Road Curriculum and Student Engagement Project, an interdisciplinary social studies, music, and visual arts supplemental program for the sixth grade, to all middle schools in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx. Participating schools will receive professional development for teachers, interdisciplinary curriculum materials, and concert experiences with Mr. Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.   Educators will learn strategies for how to use the materials to enrich the existing curriculum. Schools may send teams of up to four teachers of 6th grade social studies, music, or visual arts.  Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to schools in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx.   For more information, visit

Course Description: This four-day intensive institute with Roger Farr will focus on content area strategies for social studies and science reading, including planning for the think-along/think-aloud strategy and developing the use of academic language, content vocabulary, graphics, organization and concepts by students reading non-fiction.  During this workshop series participants will gain the necessary knowledge, strategies and skills that will enable them to help students make sense of content text, a critically important skill in the social studies and science core curriculum. Teachers will develop skill in differentiating instruction so that they can provide all students with the strategies and techniques they need when working with content text.

Dr. Roger Farr, a teacher of kindergarten through graduate school, has been working on the strategies to support reading in the content area for more than a decade.  Dr. Farr is an author, a Professor Emeritus of Education and Director of the Center for Innovation in Assessment at Indiana University and a former president of the International Reading Association. He is a member of the IRA Reading Hall of Fame and was chosen Outstanding Reading Teacher Educator in 1988.

Course Description:  This half-day workshop is designed to help teachers whose schools have chosen the Holt McDougal Textbook Program for 7th Grade realize the full potential of the program’s technology component.  Participants will work hands-on with facilitators to use all aspects of the technology component, including Online Interactive Maps, the Online Textbook, Interactive Teacher’s Edition and Holt’s One-Stop Planner CD-ROM.  The One-Stop Planner provides easy-to-use print and technology resources that allow teachers to maximize their effectiveness and save time in planning, teaching, and assessing each lesson.  Each participant is asked to bring their copy of the One-Stop Planner.

Course Description: Last year, Teachers College launched the interactive MAAP website showcasing 52 historic sites in New York City.  This year a set of informational cards detailing the significance of the sites have been published.  Participants will explore the resources available on the website, receive a packet of the informational cards and enjoy a visit to one of the historic sites.  Through these experiences teachers will learn ways to integrate teaching the African American experience with their social studies program.
