Course Description: This full-day workshop for middle and high school teachers explores the New-York Historical Society's exhibition "Lincoln and New York", a Lincoln Bicentennial exhibition of original artifacts, iconic images, and documents, many in Lincoln's hand. Through guided tours of the exhibition and in-depth analysis of primary source materials, teachers will trace the evolution of Lincoln's relationship to New York: from his 1860 Cooper Union address, to his efforts to preserve the Union, and to the wartime threat to civil liberties. A historian will provide context for understanding the exhibition. All participants will receive curriculum materials created to accompany "Lincoln and New York."

Course Description: This is a one-day content area writing workshop for grade 5-8 social studies teachers. Author Harvey “Smokey” Daniels will work with teachers as they discover how writing can be a powerful and efficient tool for helping students connect with social studies content and deepen their understanding of it. This workshop shows that incorporating carefully structured writing activities into your lessons actually increases understanding and achievement, and saves valuable instructional time. Course Description: This one-day workshop on inquiry circles is for Grade 4 through 8 social studies teachers. Authors Stephanie Harvey and Harvey “Smokey” Daniels will work with teachers who want to realize the benefits of well-structured, student-led, cross-curricular projects. Participants will learn how to implement small-group projects by creating a structure that consistently supports kids as they build knowledge. Management strategies for Internet research and how to assess and monitor student achievement will be addressed. Each participant will receive Stephanie Harvey and Harvey Daniels’s new book, Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action.
Stephanie Harvey has spent the past 30 years teaching and learning about reading and writing. She is the author of Nonfiction Matters and the Comprehension Toolkit, coauthor of Strategies that Work, and has published several instructional videos and DVDs.

Course Description: This workshop is designed to provide an introduction to the Silk Road, a vast network of overland and maritime trade routes that linked the Mediterranean world with China. The Silk Road connected regions, enabling raw materials, mercenaries, monks and others traveled across the continent of Eurasia. The network also linked people from various cultures between these two distant points, creating a network of cultural exhange. We will examine the question of how life was influenced by the mix of cultures, the conditions of geography and Silk Road exchange. During the workshop we will examine both the spectacular new exhibit on the Silk Road and the permanent collection in the Hall of Asian Peoples. Our journey will explore several major cities of the Silk Road, including Xi'an, Turfan, Samarkand and Baghdad. The Silk Road will be placed in the context of the much larger network of trade routes that extended throughout Eurasia between AD 660 and 1200.
