Citywide Conference for Families of  Students with disABILITIES - Resources

Resources from the Citywide Conference for Families of Students with disABILITIES

On Saturday, April 5th, the Office of Special Education held a Conference for Families of Students with disABILITIES at Art & Design High School in Manhattan. The day began with an outstanding performance from a student band at P53K in Brooklyn, as well as remarks from parent leaders and DOE officials. A senior at Channel View School in Queens and student representative on the Citywide Council for Special Education, shared his compelling personal story in overcoming obstacles and being accepted to several colleges next year. Dr. Tom Hehir, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and an expert on inclusive education, gave the keynote address. The 350+ participants also had the opportunity to attend workshops on special education issues ranging from assistive technology to transition, and take advantage of a resource fair staffed by over 60 organizations. It was a successful day of learning, community building, and celebrating the exceptional abilities of all students—judging by the feedback received from participants: "It was a great afternoon and I’m energized to help my son"; "I attended both workshops and the information presented was priceless"; "The event was great and I will be coming next year!"; and "Gracias por ayudar a nuestros jóvenes a crecer y aprender." If you were not able to attend, videos of each session from the Conference for Families of Students with disABILITIES will be posted later this Spring.
