For elementary school students, New York State requires that classroom teachers incorporate comprehensive health lessons into weekly classroom instruction. For both middle and high school students, a semester long daily comprehensive health education course is required, and this course must include sexual health lessons. Sexual health education must be age appropriate, skills-based, and medically accurate.
State law requires HIV/AIDS instruction for every student in grades K-12, every year. Students in grades K-6, students are required to receive five lessons each year. In grades 7-12, students are required to receive six lessons each year.
