Learning Environment Survey

About the Learning Environment Survey

This spring, the New York City Department of Education will give the second annual Learning Environment Survey to every parent, teacher, and 6-12th grade student citywide. This is an exciting opportunity for the people who know their schools best to tell us what they think.

Last year
, one in twelve New Yorkers above the age of ten filled out the survey. We heard from 338,201 students, 216,914 parents, and 31,592 teachers.

The voices of parents, students, and teachers count in two important ways. Survey results are reported to school communities and the public through Survey Reports. Survey results also count for 10% of schools’ yearly Progress Report grades.

To raise awareness of the 2008 survey, students in grades 6-12 were invited to enter a contest to have their artwork featured in 2008 survey materials. A panel of arts educators, artists, and community leaders chose "Crazy City" by Edison Sanchez, a 6th grader at the Joseph S. Wade School in the Bronx.
