A student must be referred to the committee on special education to receive an individual initial evaluation before a student can receive special education and related services for the first time. Information gathered during the assessment process is used to determine the student's educational needs and to guide decision making about his or her eligibility for special education services.

Individualized Education Program (IEP)	Based on individual needs, students require different levels of assistance.
