Role of the Panel
|
The Board of Education of the City School District of the City of New York is created by the Legislature of the State of New York and derives its powers from State law. The thirteen member body designated as the Board of Education in section 2590-g of the Education Law is known as the Panel for Educational Policy. It is part of the governance structure responsible for New York City schools, subject to the laws of the State of New York and the regulations of the State Department of Education.
One member of the Panel is appointed by each Borough President, with the remaining eight members (including the Chancellor who serves as chairperson) appointed by the Mayor. All members serve at the pleasure of the official who appointed them.
