The future of New York City hinges on student success and a well-prepared work force. Students with a Career and Technical Education (CTE) background gain valuable knowledge and skills necessary for them to enter the 21st century work force.

Work experience. All students who graduate from a CTE program sequence participates in a series of work-based learning experiences. Students explore a range of career paths, find out education and training they need to advance further, gain meaningful experiences they can add to their resumes, and develop the academic and personal behaviors (“soft skills”) to function in the workplace.
Skill foundation. Students that graduate with a CTE-endorsed Regents diploma, on top of traditional high school graduation requirements. Visit this CTE graduation requirements page for students in State-approved programs.
External validation. Under guidance from teachers, students build up a portfolio of experiences and meet individuals and organizations that can vouch for their value in the workplace. Visit our the Partners and Community page.

Finding a CTE Option

CTE programs offered in high schools are developed in response to future employment opportunities and the potential for career growth in New York City. Currently, CTE programs are offered in fields ranging from aviation technology and culinary arts to emergency management and multimedia production. CTE is delivered in two ways across the City: at designated CTE high schools and CTE programs in other high schools.

CTE High Schools
At CTE high schools, the entire institution is dedicated to CTE programs. To enroll, middle school students can apply through the high school admissions process. For questions, contact your guidance counselor or the Office of School Enrollment.

The School of Cooperative Technical Education
The School of Cooperative Technical Education, or Coop Tech, offers 17 different CTE in a variety of areas, from culinary arts to computer networking. The program has a half-day model where students can attend their DOE high school or GED program for half a day and attend Co Op Tech for the other half of the day.
