NCLB Public School Choice Program

The New York City Department of Education is committed to helping all schools reach high standards for student achievement and giving every child in every school a quality education. The NCLB Public School Choice program was implemented to allow parents of students enrolled in Title I Schools In Need of Improvement (SINI) and Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) to request a transfer to schools not identified as SINI or SURR.

Click here for an overview of the 2009-10 NCLB Public School Choice Program.

Eligibility

In accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), students who attend schools identified as Title I Schools in Need of Improvement (SINI) and Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) must be provided with the opportunity to request a transfer to a school not in need of improvement

Your child is eligible to participate if he or she is:

  •     Currently enrolled in a Title 1 SINI or SURR school and

  •     Enrolled in grades K-7 or 9-11 and NOT in the last grade of the school.

For example, current 5th grade students in a K-5 school are not eligible to participate in the program because they are in the last grade of their school.  All 8th grade students are not eligible. They participate in the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) High School Admissions Process.
