IN THEIR OWN WORDS
It is the policy of Frank Sinatra School of the Arts (FSSA) High School that every student receives the most challenging academic program and arts program. We expect every student to take four years of science and math in addition to four years of English and social studies. The studio arts program offers students an intensive sequential study of an art form that includes an opportunity to study the history, cultural significance and aesthetics of their selected art form. Additionally, students will be introduced to all of the disciplines offered at FSSA through a specially designed curriculum enabling students to make connections with all art forms and to foster a true artistic community.

COURSES AND PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Programs: Extended Day Program (90-120 minute classes per day in major), enrichment programs, internships with arts agencies, apprenticeships with artists (Artists in Residence program), projects with cultural institutions, community service through the arts
Language Classes: French, Spanish

Audition Information: Students are given a visual representation and asked to develop an original story that could be the basis for a film. Five basic questions should be addressed: What is the story about? Who are the main characters? What are the conflicts? What type of film is it? How does the film end? All materials will be provided at the audition.

Audition Information: Present a portfolio with 10-15 pieces of original work created from observation and from student’s own imagination, with a diversity of subject matter and use of media, including examples of line, value and color. Student work should be unframed and need not be matted. Three-dimensional work can be shown in photographs. You will also be required to draw from observation and memory, using pencil.

Audition Information: Perform at least one solo selection and three major scales. Take a sight-reading test and a rhythmic comprehension test in which you are required to tap back rhythmic patterns. Bring your own instrument (except piano, tuba, double bass, percussion instruments, guitar amplifiers); bring 2 copies of audition music.

OPEN HOUSE INFORMATION
We will be holding two Open House sessions, both at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 23. For the 2008-2009 school year, we will be located at 30-20 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101. We will be moving to 35-01 36th Street in Astoria in 2009!

  • The school was founded in 2001 by renowned performer Tony Bennett, who along with other artists including Harry Belafonte, Wynton Marsalis and Paul Newman, developed the 6 Guiding Principles that the school incorporates in its curriculum. The Guiding Principles are: Form and Freedom, Craft and Success, Self Confidence, Community Service, Art Across the Curriculum and Creating an Arts Community.
