IN THEIR OWN WORDSThe mission of Harvey Milk High School (HMHS), a small transfer school, is to establish and promote a community of successful, independent learners by creating a safe educational environment for all young people. HMHS is designed for students in grades 9-12 who have not met success in at least one other high school prior to admission and who want to continue their education in an alternative, small school environment. The school seeks to provide a challenging academic program with all the necessary support systems to foster the development of an individual’s character, self-respect and ability to succeed in a diverse community.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIESLeadership & Support: HMHS students may choose to participate in a variety of after school programs and services. The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the school’s affiliated community-based organization, offers after school programs in the arts, music, socialization, health, and counseling, among others. HMI is committed to serving and providing extra support services and resources to all students who are in danger of dropping out of high school and has a long history of working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth. In addition, HMHS students may also participate in the NYC Mentoring Program, College Preview Program at New York University, Cooper Union’s Saturday Arts Program, and the American Museum of Natural History’s after school science program.
