Middle School News

Welcome to Middle School Admissions!

If you applied to middle school for the 2018-2019 school year, you can now get your results letter from your school counselor or at a Family Welcome Center.

If you submitted a New Schools Round Application in March, your notification letter may also include a match to a new middle school program. You will have to choose which match you'd like your child to attend if you get two matches.

If you would like to try to change your placement, complete the second page of your results letter and turn it in to your elementary school or a Family Welcome Center by April 26 to get an appeal form.

Most middle schools will have an orientation or other event to welcome families. You do not need to register at your middle school; the registration process is complete when you get your results letter.

If you just moved to New York City or are not yet enrolled at a school for the 2017-2018 school year, learn how to enroll on the New Students page.

    Middle School Admissions Overview

Middle school offers students opportunities to explore their interests, discover new subjects, and learn more about themselves.

In the fall of their fifth grade year, your child will get a Middle School Application that lists every middle school program where they can apply. They are eligible to apply to middle schools in the district where your family is zoned for middle school and, when different, in the district where your child attends public elementary school. The Middle School Application will also include boroughwide and citywide programs at schools with programs open to your child.

Your child must apply to middle school, even if they would like to stay at their K-8 school or attend their zoned school. Apply to up to 12 middle school programs that interest you and your child.

Who can apply to middle school?
    • Current New York City residents.
    • Fifth grade students (or current sixth grade students at an elementary school that ends in sixth grade).
    • Current public district or charter school students, private school students, or parochial school students.
    • Students who move to NYC during the admissions process. Get More Information >
    • Students with Disabilities (SWD) participate in the same Middle School Admissions process as their general education peers.
    • English Language Learners (ELL) participate in the same Middle School Admissions process as students who speak English as their first language. Consider applying to programs that use a “Screened: Language” admission method; these programs often give priority to English Language Learners.
    • Students in Temporary Housing (STH) can apply to middle school even if their housing situation is uncertain. They do not need paperwork to apply to schools or enroll in a school.

Middle school resources are available in ten languages:

    Find a Middle School

Explore schools and programs by thinking about what will help your child learn and grow. Think about their interests, learning needs, and how they’d get to and from school. Find a number of places where you think your child might be happy. You can apply to up to 12 middle school programs.

Use the tools below to find schools that interest you and your child:

    NYC Middle School Directory
Learn about applying to middle school and find programs that interest your child. Pick up a print copy of your district’s Middle School Directory from your child’s current school, from a Family Welcome Center, or at a Middle School Fair.

    School Search
Find your district and learn if you have a zoned school. Students who live in an area that is zoned for a specific school have an Admissions Priority to attend it.

    Charter Schools
Charter Schools have their own separate admissions process. Contact these schools directly to learn how to apply.

You can also go to Middle School Admissions Events and Open Houses to explore your middle school options.

The seven middle school programs below will be opening for the 2018-2019 school year. Read more about each new middle school program:

    • 14K582 - M.S. 582
    • 16K898 - M.S. 898

Get Your Middle School Results in April

If you submitted a Middle School Application, you’ll get your results letter from your school counselor in April 2018. The results letter will include your middle school placement for September 2018. You do not need to register at your middle school; the registration process is complete when you get your letter.

If you submitted a New Schools Round Application in March, your results letter may also include a match to a new middle school program. You will have to choose which match you'd like your child to attend if you get two matches.

Most students are matched to one of the programs ranked on their Middle School Application, but it is not guaranteed. Students who do not match to one of these programs will be matched to another program for which they are eligible in either the district where they are zoned for middle school or, when different, the district where they attend public elementary school.

If you would like to try to change your placement, complete the second page of your results letter and turn it in to your elementary school to get an appeal form.

    Diversity in Middle School Admissions

Middle schools across the city were invited to participate in a pilot to increase diversity within their schools for students applying to attend for the 2018-2019 school year. The seven schools below are participating in the pilot. Read more about each school’s specific pilot:

    Middle School FAQs

    • Why did I match to a choice not listed on my application?

If you do not match to one of your choices, you are placed in a school with availability that is in either:

      1. The district to which you are zoned to attend middle school.
      2. The district where you attend public elementary school.

    • Can I appeal my placement?

Yes, NYC public school students can appeal their middle school placement by requesting an appeals form from their elementary school guidance counselor. Appeals are due back to elementary schools on April 26, 2018. Non-public school students can get an appeals form from a Family Welcome Center. Complete the appeals form by selecting up to three programs from the program choices available to you on your original application.

Appeals are not guaranteed and are based on seat availability and the school’s original selection criteria.

    • Do I have to apply to middle school?

Yes. Middle School Admissions is the best opportunity to have a voice in where your child attends middle school. Students who are planning on attending their zoned or continuing school should still submit applications.

    • Which middle schools can see my child’s academic information? What academic information can they see?

Middle schools with a program that uses a Screened, Composite Score, or Screened: Language Admissions Method can see your child’s academic information. They can see the following information for your child’s fourth grade school year:

      • Final course grades
      • Math and ELA State Test scores
      • Attendance and Punctuality
    • Does my younger child have priority to the middle school my older child already attends?

No. Middle School Admissions does not have admissions priorities for siblings. It is not guaranteed that your child applying to fifth grade will be matched to the same middle school that your older child already attends.

    • My child is already in middle school. Can I use the Middle School Application to transfer middle schools?

No. Middle School Admissions is only used for initial placements into middle schools. You must visit a Family Welcome Center to explore transferring. Please note that you may only request a transfer for specific reasons.

    • I am moving to New York City next year. Can I submit a Middle School Application this year?

No. Only current New York City residents can participate in Middle School Admissions.
