Days and Times
- Elementary and middle school students will attend summer school Monday - Thursday from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm.
- High School students will attend summer school Monday-Friday five hours per day. Check with your summer school location for exact hours.
February: Promotion in Doubt letters sent.
Families of students who are at risk of being retained in the same grade for the following year receive a Promotion in Doubt letter. If you receive a Promotion in Doubt letter, immediately arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher, guidance counselor, and/or principal to discuss additional supports that are available to help your child.
May-Early June: Schools determine summer school recommendations.
Schools complete promotion portfolios for students who may not be ready for the next grade level based on student work and assessments from throughout the school year. Principals make promotion recommendations based on the English language arts and math skills demonstrated in each student’s portfolio. Students in grade 8 are also required to pass their English, math, social studies, and science courses to be promoted.
Most students with disabilities are held to the same promotion criteria as their peers without disabilities. If your child is held to modified promotion criteria, schools complete modified promotion criteria portfolios to determine if your child is ready for the next grade level.
June: Promotion Decision letters sent and students register for summer school.
Students who are not making adequate progress towards meeting promotion standards will be required to attend summer school at their home school, if it is offered there, or at a school nearby. High school students who need credits in specific subjects may have to attend a non-local program to get the class(es) they need. Families of students who are not promoted receive written notice that includes their child’s summer school start date and location. Families should contact the school if they believe their child should be retained and have not received a letter or if a translated version of the letter is needed.
Students in grades 6-12 who are not promoted in June may not participate in June graduation or stepping-up ceremony activities. If you have questions about participation in elementary school graduation activities, contact the principal of your child’s school.
July: Summer school begins.

August: High school Regents exams. Promotion decisions sent to families.
The New York State Department of Education administers Regents exams to high school students in mid-August. All high school students, including students not enrolled in summer school and private school students, can take Regents exams in August.
At the end of the summer, principals make final promotion decisions based on whether students’ portfolios and summer school work demonstrate readiness for the next grade level. Beginning in mid-August, families of students not promoted in June will receive a final promotion decision letter in the mail. To ensure that families receive letters in a timely fashion, families should make sure that the school has their most up-to-date address. Families should contact the school if they do not receive a promotion decision letter or if a translated version is needed.
Families may appeal promotion decisions by submitting a written appeal to their child's principal by the end of August.
- Students are expected to attend all summer school classes. Your summer school location can provide more specific information about attendance.
- Breakfast and lunch are offered to all summer school students.
- Students who receive yellow bus transportation can find their bus route information at the Office of Pupil Transportation website beginning in June.
- High school students who require transportation must obtain a summer MetroCard (available from the summer school location).
- Students who live in New York City but will be entering the New York City public school system for the first time must provide proper residency documentation and copies of the student's report card and/or transcript from the current/previous school to enroll in summer school. Families can appeal promotion decisions after summer school students have been evaluated in August. If you have been notified that your child is not being promoted (either in June or in August), you have the option to appeal this decision. The letter you receive will include appeal instructions. First priority for summer school enrollment is given to resident students who are currently enrolled in the New York City public school system. All other applicants will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to available seats
Families can register students for summer 2018 instructional programs between June 9 and June 28, and on July 5 (first day of summer school).
Students must register in person at the school the student wishes to attend. Use the resources below to determine what documentation is required. Students (except for those emancipated*) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. * The requirements for demonstrating emancipation are set forth in Section VIII.B of Chancellor’s Regulation A-101.
New York City Resident Non-public School Students
All non-public school students (e.g., private/parochial students) who are New York City residents are eligible to attend summer school tuition-free, if they meet the eligibility criteria. Learn about eligibility and documentation requirements.
New York City Charter School Students
All charter school students who are New York City residents are eligible to attend summer school tuition-free, if they meet the eligibility criteria. Learn about eligibility and documentation requirements.

Temporary Residents (Visiting for the Summer)
Students who are not registered in the New York City public school system, and will not be enrolled in the New York City public school system in September 2018, are eligible to attend summer school tuition-free if they provide proper residency documentation and meet the eligibility criteria.
