Options

The DOE offers several assessment options for English and math in all grades; schools choose the combination of Periodic Assessments that meets their needs. Schools can also apply to design their own combination of assessments, which may or may not include DOE-provided options.

Acuity Predictive Assessments are like short versions of New York State Tests. They give an early prediction of students' likely performance level so that students and teachers know how much work they need to do, and where to focus their effort, to meet New York State Learning Standards. They also measure academic growth from the beginning to the end of the school year and between grade levels.

Acuity Instructionally Targeted Assessments
measure how well students have learned information recently taught in class to help teachers plan instructional next steps. They do not predict performance on state tests.

Performance Series Computer Adaptive Assessments
are given online and change depending on the answers students give, so they can provide very precise information about individual student's strengths and areas for improvement. They are especially helpful for students performing above or below grade level, including special education students. Schools can give them at any time.

Teachers College Reading and Writing Project (TCRWP)
Assessments are administered to students one-on-one to track each students' growing ability to read increasingly difficult texts with fluency, accuracy, and comprehension.

K2 Assessments (ECLAS-2, TCRWP, Fountas & Pinnell, DRA) measure students' beginning reading skills.

English Language Learner (ELL) Periodic Assessments measure student progress in English and Spanish language proficiency.
