Changes to Our Schools

The Office of Portfolio Planning (Portfolio) strives to ensure that all students in New York City have access to a high quality school or program that meets their individual needs.   The creation of new schools – district and charter -- is one strategy Portfolio uses to meet specific community needs.  For example, new schools may help relieve elementary school overcrowding in a district or offer a popular Career and Technical Education pathway.

Assessment of Community Needs

Assessing community needs for new schools is a complex process and varies by location.  Based on conversations with Community Education Councils, District Leadership Teams and other community leaders throughout the past year, the DOE has made a preliminary assessment of the need for new schools throughout the City.  Over the course of the 2009-10 school year, the DOE will continue to meet with local communities to revise and update the assessment of community educational priorities and determine what types of new schools (if any) are needed in a particular community.
