P.S. 236
The Mill Basin School
Parent Handbook 2009 – 2010
School Safety Plan/Evacuation Plan
In light of warnings concerning public safety, P.S. 236 safety procedures are as follows: all visitors to our school must sign in at the desk located in the lobby. You must show photo ID and state your business to the School Safety Agent. You will be issued a pass, which you must wear while you are in the building. You should only go to that area of the building where you have business. Please note that we, at 236 are committed to providing a school setting in which the students, staff and visitors are safe and secure.
1) Our School Safety Plan is in place. Our School Safety Committee meets monthly (and more often, if necessary) to discuss safety concerns. Safety meeting discussions are reported to the School Leadership Team monthly.
2) In event of an emergency situation, protocols handling the emergency are in place and will be followed as per the school safety plan, which has been approved by the Department of Education and the New York City Police Department.
3) The following outlines the plan for student pickup in the event of an emergency situation. If you need to pick up your child earlier than the end of the school day, children may be picked up from the lobby entrance on East 63rd. Street. If an emergency such as the one of the nature of 9/11 occurs, we want the children to remain calm and safe. We do not want chaos to ensue. Following protocol and the procedures will help to ensure that all children are safe and are signed out by the correct parent/family member.
Children will only be dismissed to those listed on the blue emergency contact card. You or your designee must have photo I.D. in order to sign a child out of school.
Pick up will not take place between our lunch transition times:
11:55 a.m. – 12:10 p.m., 12:20 p.m. – 12:35 p.m. and 12:50 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
If you come to school at these times, you will have to wait.
It is very important for parents/guardians to follow the directions of school personnel for the smooth pick up and safety of the children.
· Main Lobby (desk 1): release verification from blue card
· Main Lobby (desk 2): classroom contact for student(s) pick-up
Under crowded conditions, parents will wait in the auditorium
4) In the event that we are forced to evacuate our building, our school has an arrangement in place with three other Department of Education schools, as well as Gil Hodges Lanes. These institutions would accept our students and staff. As per the School Safety Plan, three are in walking distance of school. The other is not in the school’s neighborhood, in the event that we had to leave the community.
In the event of an evacuation students would be walked to their designated site
Students in grades Pre Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and 1st grade will evacuate to:
Gil Hodges Lanes
6161 Strickland Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11234
(718) 763-6800
Students in grades 2 and 3 would evacuate to:
P.S. 312
7103 Ave T
Brooklyn, NY 11234
(718) 763-4015
Students in grades 4 and 5 would evacuate to:
Roy H. Mann, I.S. 78
1420 E. 68th. Street
Brooklyn, NY 11234
(718) 763-4701
If we had to leave the community, all students would then walk to:
Marine Park, I.S. 278
1925 Stuart Street
Brooklyn, NY 11234
(718) 375-3523
P.S. 236 staff will remain in the school to man the phones and answer parent questions/concerns.
School personnel will also be in place to apprise parents of procedures for pick up at grade appropriate evacuation sites. You must have photo ID and be listed on the blue emergency card in order to pick up a child. It is vital that parents/designees follow the directions of school personnel at the evacuation site in order to ensure the safety of the children.
.
We hope that we will never have to put any of these plans into action. We ask that you update the blue emergency card as soon as you may have a change (moving, change of cell phone number or home number). You may send a note in to the attention of Ms. Mandell if you need to update your card or you may come to school to do this in person. We need your most up to date information so that we may contact you if we need to.
Thank you for your support and your anticipated cooperation.
