SHSAT results out soon!
The Specialized High School Admission Test (SHSAT) may seem like a distant memory to 8th graders but not for long. Exam results are due out shortly and students who earn a seat in one of the specialized high schools will have to make an important decision sooner rather than later.
If you were one of the more than 25,000 8th and 9th graders who took the SHSAT last fall, you will be receiving a letter in early February stating whether or not you've been offered a seat. What you need to do next depends upon what type of letter you receive.
You got into a specialized high school
The letter will tell you which school you've been matched to, and, if you're accepted to LaGuardia, to which department as well. You'll also find out if you've been offered a seat in one of the non-specialized schools that you ranked on the high school application submitted back in November. This means that you could be accepted to several schools. Caution: If you are fortunate enough to be offered a seat in both a specialized and non-specialized high school, you'll need to decide which one to accept before the deadline stated on the letter.
Choose wisely: Once you decline an offer to a school, you can't get it back. The school you accept will be where you will go for the 2008-09 school year.
You didn't get into a specialized high school
If you're not offered a seat in a specialized high school, the letter will tell you that, along with your score on the SHSAT. You will receive another letter in March telling you whether or not you have been matched with one of the schools that you ranked on the high school application. Sometimes this is referred to as the "main round" of high school acceptance. Only students offered a seat in a specialized high school will find out in February if they've been matched with a non-specialized high school as well. Everyone else will have to wait until at least the main round to find out their high school match.

Fairs for new high schools opening in 2009
Still looking for a high school? The Department of Education is expected to announce the latest batch of new small schools this week. At the fairs, you may meet with representatives from the schools and sign up for open houses. The timeline for applying is very brief. Last year the list of new schools was announced in early February and the deadline to submit applications was late February — the same date that students had to accept or decline their specialized high school placement.
Fairs showcasing the new small high schools scheduled to open in the fall will take place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Complex Feb. 5, 6-8 p.m., and Feb. 9-10, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Map
