“The Partnership takes a new approach to teacher education… We are confident that the Partnership will help us attract and retain more high-quality teachers and prepare them for the hardest-to-staff subject areas, grade levels, and communities.” - Mayor Bloomberg, 2006 State of the City Address
TEACHER EXCELLENCE

NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence
The NYC Partnership for Teacher Excellence is an innovative new model for the preparation and development of aspiring teachers that better prepares them to be successful in high needs New York City public schools. Bringing together The City University of New York (CUNY), New York University (NYU, including the Steinhardt School of Education and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences), and the New York City Department of Education (DOE), The Partnership equips aspiring teachers with the skills and ongoing support they need to build their careers in the city.

The Partnership addresses one of the challenges currently facing public education in New York City – the need to dramatically improve the recruitment and retention of high-quality teachers – and is developing a solution that can serve as a model for urban public school teacher education across the nation.

The Fund for Public Schools facilitated private support for The Partnership through a $15 million grant from the Petrie Foundation. The funding has enabled the Department of Education to directly connect educational theory with real-world practice. The Partnership fosters collaboration between university faculties, as well as seasoned DOE educators, to both enhance curricular content and to tightly link curricular fieldwork with the skills and instructional practices that teachers need to be successful.
