“Education takes place in the classroom, but successful schools require the support and participation of the entire city – not just the students and teachers, but also parents, families, businesses, volunteers, and alumni.”
– Caroline Kennedy
ALUMNI
We are calling on you , a lumni of New York City public schools, to get involved and give back in whatever way you can. The opportunity for the millions of public school alumni to come together to help today’s students is enormous. Imagine if every NYC public school alumnus gave back in some way – we could raise many millions of dollars to upgrade school libraries, give students strong role models to help guide them through their educational careers, and pave the way for a better, brighter future for so many struggling youth in New York City. The result could be totally game-changing.

Visit www.nycgrads.org to find the best way that you can make a difference for today's students. Here, you will find opportunities to sign up as a member of the alumni community, volunteer, and give back by supporting literacy efforts as some deserving public school libraries.

Why are we asking alumni to help school libraries? There is nothing as essential as reading, and there are few academic deficiencies as crippling as illiteracy. While it’s no surprise that deficient readers are far more likely than skilled readers to drop out of high school, you may be shocked to learn that one in five U.S. workers read at a lower skill level than their job requires.

We must ensure that New York City’s students are not only learning to read, but learning to love reading, for the sake of our city and our nation. The answer: build vibrant, inviting school libraries and fill them with engaging books, up-to-date technology, and college and career preparation resources.

Once you meet our amazing public school students and their dedicated librarians, principals, and teachers, you will see how your contribution can have a lasting impact on their school and their lives.
