PS 57 students show off their new vocabulary books donated by Erinn
Cosby (Top, Second from left) and the Ennis Cosby Foundation
Students at PS 57 in Manhattan are creating their own personal dictionaries this year thanks to the Ennis Cosby Foundation.
The organization, named in honor of the late son of comedian Bill Cosby, donated vocabulary books to the third and fourth grade students to encourage them to learn new words.
Teachers select a word of the week and students write that word and its definition down in the book.
Using their latest entry, students said they were "ecstatic" about the contribution.
“I think getting this book was great because when I learn a new word, I don’t have to come to the teacher for a post-it. I can write it down in my book and keep it forever,” a third grader, Jahmere Smith, said.
"If you forget a word, you can get your notebook and it will be right there for you,” another third grader, Andry Breton, said.
The school is focusing heavily on vocabulary this year as part of a school-wide initiative to improve student achievement.
