Edison High School is Double Dutch champion

Edison High School jumpers show off their winning moves during the City's first Double Dutch championship

Students from
Thomas Edison High School jumped their way to the top this weekend to become the City's first Double Dutch champions.

Teams from eight public high schools competed in singles and doubles events at the jump-roping tournament at Lehman College in the Bronx. Edison beat out Westinghouse High School by 15 points after 11th grader Lauren Wiggins managed to jump over her teammate in the free-style portion of the match.

"I was able to do it after practicing on a mat just one time," Wiggins said. "It worked well."

Scores are based on speed and number of steps.

"Winning overall was so gratifying, because we practiced as much as we could all season," Edison jumper Laa'neisha Jones said. "We plan to participate next year."

"It was hard work and determination that paid off in the end and gave us the win," Edison Coach Adela Brudasca said. "It was new and exciting."

This year, New York City became the first public school system in the country to create a competitive Double Dutch league. Open to boys and girls, the sport attracted 153 students from 17 high schools in its debut season.

Brooklyn's Westinghouse High School placed second and Teacher Preparatory High School, also in Brooklyn, placed third.
