Family Basketball Night in Queens

Teachers at P.S./I.S. 178 in Queens traded blackboards for backboards last week when they took on students and their parents on the basketball court.

More than one hundred teachers, school staff, and families packed the Holliswood gymnasium for the school’s second annual Family Basketball Night.

The event—which included a scrimmage for students, followed by a Faculty vs. Family exhibition game—was designed to encourage greater communication among members of the school community and to promote fitness and healthy living.

“It’s great getting to see our teachers play basketball,” said a fifth-grader, George Stefanakis.

“Our mission statement encourages open communication,” Principal Jennifer Ambert explained. “All constituents, every staff member, family member and student is a proactive participant contributing to the school’s success.”

The message was not lost on parents like Happy Saha, whose son Rohan attends first grade. “This event brings together parents who don’t necessarily know other families,” Saha said—echoing a sentiment heard throughout the night.
