Students Send Bags of Money and Hope to Haiti
"Dear Haiti: here is some money and a bag of hope," wrote Hana, a third-grader at P.S. 188, in a letter. "I am praying for you every night. Remember there is always hope! Very soon everything will be fixed."
Hana's determination to help the victims of last week's earthquake in Haiti helped mobilize her entire Queens school, which donated more than $2,000 to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund this week. Schools across the five boroughs are doing their part for the earthquake-ravaged country.
At M.S. 391 in the Bronx, students, families, and school staff raised more than $1,400 in three days.
And at P.S. 255 in Brooklyn, the school community is planning a bake sale and other events to raise awareness and funds for the victims.
Eury Padilla, a teacher at M.S. 391, said that families' donations ranged in amount from only a few cents to hundreds of dollars, but that they were all "given from the heart."
If you want to contribute, please send monetary donations to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which will distribute the funds to reputable relief organizations working in Haiti. You can donate online or by calling 311.
