The P.S. 115 community in Canarsie, Brooklyn found ways to help raise money for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
Students across the City continue to find creative ways to help the victims of last month’s earthquake in Haiti.
Students at P.S. 115 in Queens organized a fundraiser after learning that some of their classmates were searching for family members in Haiti. They designed posters and flyers to publicize a fundraiser and a bake sale for students, staff, and families. During a ceremony at the school, students presented an oversized check of more than $2,100 to their local Red Cross chapter for relief efforts.
“I have family members in Haiti and I wanted to help them feel better,” a fifth grader, Starr, said.
“The people in Haiti needed our help to get food and other basic needs,” said Alyssa, another fifth grader.
At P.S. 155, also in Queens, students raised more than $2,200 by holding a bake sale. Students publicized the event, baked homemade treats, and donated their own money to the cause. The entire community dressed in the colors of the Haitian flag—blue and red—to show support for the victims.
In Canarsie, Brooklyn, Student Council members at P.S. 115 worked with members of the Parent/Teacher Association to organize a bake sale. In only two days, the school raised more than $3,500 for the Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.
