When some Queens kindergarteners created a snowman during last month’s winter storm, they also built their English speaking skills.
The five year-olds at P.S. 173 are all learning English, and their teachers took the opportunity to teach them to follow and to formulate simple directions.
When they returned to their classroom, the students recalled the steps they took to build the snowman and wrote “How to Make a Snowman” articles.
“We made the snowman with snow. We put a hat, a scarf, and eyes,” recited Kyle, a student.
“We put a carrot for the nose, a hat on the head, and a scarf,” added Lily, another student. “I played with my friends.”
Teacher Roslyn Zeidel declared the lesson a success.
“The next day, the students asked if we were going to make a snowman again!” Zeidel said. “It was a wonderful Kindergarten day that the students and teachers will remember for a long time."
