In Our Schools Today

25th Annual Guidance Recognition Ceremony

Yesterday, 25 guidance counselors representing all grade levels (K-12) from all five boroughs and support networks were honored for the exemplary work they have done for students and families in our schools. For the past 25 years, the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers recognizes those who go beyond the call of duty to contribute to the academic, social-emotional, and career readiness successes of all students.

Principals throughout the City submitted a narrative that described what makes his/her counselor exceptional. One principal wrote, “our counselor’s work exemplifies NOT what Guidance Counselors do, but HOW STUDENTS ARE BETTER OFF, because of what Guidance Counselors do.” Counselors were also described as being proactive in serving the needs of students. Central, CFN and Specialty District staff read applications and selected honorees in Elementary, Middle and High Schools in all five boroughs. Central, CFN, and Specialty District staff read applications and selected this year's honorees.

This year counselors from Alternate Learning Centers (ALCs) from District 88 were honored. ALC counselors provide a “teachable counseling moment” for students who are serving a Superintendent’s Suspension.

All of the honorees are instrumental in making a profound difference in the lives of students. A sincere thank you goes out to all of the honorees for their professionalism and dedication to our students, families, and school communities.
