SHOP FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Shop for Public Schools began in 2004, when a group of New York City retailers approached Caroline Kennedy, Vice-Chair of The Fund for Public Schools, about becoming more involved in supporting our city’s public schools. Working with the New York City Department of Education, The Fund determined that the most effective use of funds raised from Shop Week would be to target them to help schools meet their library needs and support student literacy.

For the past six years, participating merchants pledged a portion of their proceeds for one week each fall or a flat donation to The Fund to help improve public school libraries across our city. Partner retailers not only donated their time, energy, and proceeds to Shop – many also hosted daily in-store events and special promotions throughout the week to help publicize the program and benefit The Fund.

Shop for Public Schools has played a vital role in The Fund’s larger fundraising efforts for literacy initiatives and provided a great opportunity for all New Yorkers to support their public schools by shopping at their favorite stores.

The sixth annual Shop for Public Schools kicked off with a special book reading at PS 142 Library in Manhattan, featuring The Fund for Public Schools’ Vice-Chair Caroline Kennedy and actress Julianne Moore.

Shop for Public Schools 2009 attracted the highest level of retailer involvement in the history of the program. Key highlights include:

Over 80 participating merchants in 250 retail locations across all five boroughs.

Participants represented the full spectrum of the retail industry – from small boutiques and neighborhood businesses to major chains and well-known designers, including Staples, Barnes & Noble, and Christian Dior.

Shop’s geographic reach expanded to new areas, with retailers in the Fordham Road neighborhood of the Bronx participating for the first time.

The enthusiastic response from stores throughout the city was a powerful testament to how much the cause of literacy means to New Yorkers, even in these difficult economic times.

Funds raised from Shop for Public Schools 2009 supported the revitalization of 20 public school libraries, impacting more than 23,000 students.

Funds raised through Shop transform school libraries by enabling librarians to purchase resources such as books, furniture, computers and educational software that will inspire a life-long love of reading.
