Welcome! I hope you all had a wonderful summer vacation and I hope you are looking forward with enthusiasm to the new school year!
Every year we urge our parents to volunteer at the school. There are many tasks that volunteers can perform. If you are interested in helping out, please speak with Ms. Donna Santana, our Parent Coordinator.
Our mission at Public School 52 is as follows:
To create a safe nurturing environment that encourages students to accept and find the best in themselves and others.
To challenge students to reach their full academic potential.
To help students find the inner confidence they need to take risks and set goals in their lives.
To instill in the students a sense of responsibility and respect for themselves, their school, and their community.
To have students leave Public School 52 prepared to be the teachers, leaders and dreamers of tomorrow.
Below are four items that need your immediate attention:
1. Emergency Card: Emergency information is vital to the safety of your child. Please complete and return the emergency form to school immediately. It is very important that we have this information on record in case of an emergency.
2. Calendar: A school calendar is enclosed with this newsletter and with every newsletter during the school year. It contains information about testing dates, early dismissals and school closings. Please keep this information handy so that you may refer to it throughout the school year.
3. Absenteeism: Excuses for absences are required by the Department of Education and must accompany the child when he or she returns to school. The excuse should state the reason for the absence and the date or dates of the absence. If for any reason your child is expected to be absent for three or more days, please contact the attendance supervisor or school immediately.
4. Arrival/Dismissal/Extended Day - Our official school day for all students in grades 1 – 5 begins at 8:03 am daily and ends at 2:45 pm. Breakfast begins at 7:40am.
Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten begin at 8:45am. It is important that your child arrives to school on time prepared to meet the challenges of the day. Students will not be allowed to enter the building until 7:40am. We do not have authorized personnel to supervise your children prior to school opening and after closing. The School Safety Agent is not permitted to take care of the children.
There is no Extended Day on Fridays – Children will not be allowed to enter before 7:40am.
Attendance and punctuality are most important for the education of your children. We will strictly enforce this. When a child arrives late, the entire class is interrupted.
When a child is absent, he/she loses a day of learning. Picking up your child before dismissal is another means of losing educational time.
Many students will be enrolled in our Extended Day program. If your child is identified as one of the students who must attend Extended Day, he/she must be in school early Monday –Thursday.
Extended day students will be issued identification cards and are due in school by 8:03. They will be allowed to have breakfast at 7:40. The majority of the students who are identified for the program will be taught by their classroom teachers. Students will be sent to their classrooms when they arrive to school or after the breakfast program.
Students must arrive to school on time for the Extended Day program.
Attendance is mandatory for students who are identified for the program. Extended day students who do not come to school on time or cut class will face consequences.
School Discipline Plan
During the first few days of the school year each student will receive a copy of the school discipline plan. The school rules and regulations should be read and reviewed by you with your child. You will also receive the Department of Education “Code of Discipline” booklet with rules and regulations which must be adhered to.
We are a uniform school. All children are expected to wear the standard school uniform:
Boys: navy blue pants, white shirt, blue tie
Girls: navy blue skirt/jumper, white blouse, blue tie
Boys and Girls: School Spirit Gear
See PTA bulletin board and /or our Parent Coordinator for vendors where our uniforms can be purchased.
We have a limited supply of School Spirit garments available. Please see Ms. Santana if you would like to purchase our school gear.
All students are expected to wear their uniform to assembly programs.
Remember to join the Parent Teachers' Association. Meetings are usually held on the third Thursday of each month. Please see Ms. Hawkins, our PTA president for further information.
