The Nomination Process

Who is eligible?

Current, full-time NYC Department of Education and charter school teachers who have demonstrated exceptional success in the following areas: Impact of Students’ Learning + Instructional Practices + Professional Contributions.

Sets and exceeds rigorous, standards-driven goals for stellar student academic, social, and behavioral achievement. Uses student achievement data to inform practice. Maintains high expectations and uses a variety of teaching methods to engage all students in rigorous learning experiences. Demonstrates leadership in and out of the classroom with colleagues and greater school community. Shows relentless efforts to engage students.

How does it work?

  • Anyone- students, parents, teachers, colleagues, principals, community members - can submit a nomination for a current NYC DOE or charter school teacher.
  • After initial review, a select group of nominees will be invited to complete a more comprehensive application.
  • Semi-finalists will be interviewed; Finalists will be visited in their classrooms.
  • Up to 10 Big Apple Awards recipients will be announced and honored at a celebration in June.

Why Nominate a teacher?

Recipients will receive a classroom grant for their students and schools. Big Apple Award recipients will continue to stay in the classroom, while serving as citywide ambassadors for the 2014-15 school year. For more information on the ambassador year, click here.
