DESCRIPTION:

Pearson’s Virtual Lab programs are a set of realistic and sophisticated simulations covering chemistry, physics, and planetary motion. In these laboratories, students are put into a virtual environment where they are free to make the choices and decisions that they would confront in an actual laboratory setting and, in turn, experience the resulting consequences. These Virtual Lab products were created at Brigham Young University and include the individual products Virtual ChemLab, Virtual Physical Science, Virtual Physics, and Virtual Earth Science.

NOTES:

This application has several setup options.  Software needs to be installed on every workstation, but the main difference is in how students and instructor will interact.

  • Standalone (aka workbook version) - This implementation is the simplest in the options to setup, to use and requires almost no oversight by the instructor.   Students will have access to pre-defined simulations as well as option to explore the laboratory on their own or to perform custom experiments written by the instructor.  However, instructor will need to manually distribute the assignments and check the results.
  • Server-Based - This implementation provides option for students to receive their assignments and submit the results electronically.  This is accomplished through the shared database containing the class lists, assignments, lab books, and scores.  The database can be shared either directly using a file server placed on the LAN (drive mapping is required) or through a web server placed anywhere on the intranet (and perhaps at 2 MTC as well).  This is obviously not a simple solution.  We recommend the standalone version.
