In order to apply for principal positions at the New York City Department of Education, you must be a member of the Principal Candidate Pool. Please note: All New York City Schools principals appointed as of February 1, 2008 are automatically placed in the Pool. All current Department of Education employees who tested onto principal eligibility lists under the Board of Examiners before 1990 are also Pool members.
How to Apply for a School-Specific Principal Position:
- Go to the online application page.
- Log-in with your last name and file number to confirm that you have been accepted into the Principal Candidate Pool.
- Click on “Principal Positions”.
- Click on “[borough]” in which the school is located.
- Click on “[school name]” and scroll down to the bottom of the page to submit a new application.
- Tell us why you would be a good leader for this particular school, and, if you need to, attach an updated resume. The information that you provided when you applied to the Principal Candidate Pool will also be available for hiring managers.
The deadline for applications for jobs newly posted on November 2, 2009 is 3 p.m. on Monday, November 16, 2009. Please be sure all applications include your 6-digit file number that was issued along with your NYC Certificate of Eligibility.
The deadline for applications for jobs posted on October 16, 2009 is extended to Friday, November 6, 2009
Principal vacancies are generally posted at the beginning and middle of each month and will be open for at least 15 days. Posting dates may be adjusted for holidays or weekends.
Selection for school appointments will be done in accordance with Chancellor’s Regulation C-30.
