Leaves of Absence

  • Instructional / school-based Staff

    Instructional and school based staff are entitled to apply for and be granted a non-medical leave of absence without pay. Requests for a non–medical leave of absence must be approved by the your principal or supervisor, and must be sent to HR Connect for final determination.To apply for a non-medical leave of absence without pay, Instructional / school-based Staff employees must complete the OP 160  Leave of Absence without Pay Application form.

    When applying please ensure the following:
    • Complete the application form in its entirety
    • Sign and date the application form
    • Ensure that your principal or supervisor signs the application form

    The application must be accompanied by the required supporting documentation. (see table below)

    All non-medical leaves, with the exception of military leaves, MUST be approved by the employee's supervisor or principal.

    Non-medical leaves are granted for up to one year only. Employees must reapply each year.

    Important Tip: You should submit your leave of absence without pay application prior to the first day of absence, or as soon as possible thereafter.

    The most common delays in processing a leave of absence without pay are caused by incomplete and late applications.

    Below is a chart of required supporting documentation and eligibility requirements based on leave type:

    Appointed teacher-line staff member with 1 year of service  One year with a one year extension
    Must reapply each year
     Study  Bursar's receipt indicating at least 8 credit hours per semester at an accredited college or university  Appointed teacher-line staff member with 1 year of service  Up to 2 years, must reapply each year
     To work for a charter school A letter from the principal of the charter school confirming your offer of employment with the school, the position title, and the dates of the employment.

    IMPORTANT: The charter school must be affiliated with the NYC Department of Education. If the employee wants to work at a private charter school or a charter school outside of the NYC Department of Education, they must resign from their position.
     Appointed teacher-line staff member with 1 year of service One year with a one year extension

    Must reapply each year

    Conversion Charters Schools:

    Employees who are currently working at a school that is converting or has converted from a New York City Public School to a New York City Public Charter School can extended this leave beyond the two-year period
    Adjustment of Personal Affairs   Letter detailing situation of grave nature   Appointed teacher-line staff member with 1 year of service  One year with a one year extension
    Must reapply each year
    Military Service  Copy of military orders, Military Pay Reimbursement Agreement  No seniority requirement 
    Spouse in the Military  Copy of military orders, Military Pay Reimbursement Agreement  No seniority requirement

  • Educational Leadership Staff

    To apply for a non-medical leave of absence without pay, Educational Leadership Staff employees must complete the OP 160  Leave of Absence without Pay Application form.

  • UFT Educational Paraprofessionals

    To apply for a non-medical leave of absence without pay, UFT Educational Paraprofessionals employees must complete the Educational Paraprofessional Leave Application Leave of Absence without Pay Application form.

    When applying please ensure the following:

    • Complete the application form in its entirety
    • Sign and date the application form
    • Ensure that your principal or supervisor signs the application form
    • The application must be accompanied by the required supporting documentation.

    All non-medical leaves, with the exception of military leaves, MUST be approved by the employee's supervisor or principal.Below is a chart of required supporting documentation and eligibility requirements based on leave type:

  • Family Paraprofessionals

    Family Paraprofessionals and Hourly Non-Competitive Employees who want to apply for a non-medical leave of absence must use the Family Paraprofessionals & Hourly Non-Competitive Employees Leave Application.

    When applying please ensure the following:

    • Complete the application form in its entirety
    • Sign and date the application form
    • Ensure that your principal or supervisor signs the application form
    • The application must be accompanied by the required supporting documentation.

    All non-medical leaves, with the exception of military leaves, MUST be approved by the employee's supervisor or principal.Below is a chart of required supporting documentation and eligibility requirements based on leave type:
