Teaching Opportunities in New Schools
Positions are available in both brand new and recently-opened small schools.
The New Schools Initiative
Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein have made new school creation an essential part of New York City’s education reform effort. New schools offer personalized learning environments and provide classes designed to ensure that all students meet high standards and graduate. The schools also partner with non-profit organizations, cultural institutions, and businesses that bring additional resources to enhance learning. Some of the new schools have a theme, such as science, law, business, or the arts, which enables students to connect what they learn in the classroom to the world beyond. The Department of Education has created 238 new schools since 2002. Over 50 more will open in September 2008.

Teaching Opportunities
The new schools will incorporate standards-based curricula and utilize innovative educational approaches like interdisciplinary study, project-based instruction, and real-world experiences. Teachers in these schools are integral to the planning and design of school curricula. Schools will also have close partnerships with community-based and non-profit organizations that will assist in the planning, development, and ongoing support of the schools. New schools usually open with only one grade and phase-in an additional grade each year.
These new schools need teachers in many different content areas, as well as guidance counselors, social workers, secretaries, and paraprofessionals. The schools are seeking highly qualified, creative, thoughtful individuals, fully in accord with the vision and mission of the specific schools, aware of the energy required to create a new school, and committed to the belief that every student can learn and succeed. Staff will be selected in accord with all contractual provisions with the United Federation of Teachers.
Most of these schools will be sharing space in facilities with existing public schools, some of which may be in the process of phasing-out.
How to Apply
Below is a list of the new schools opening in September 2008. You may apply for a position by submitting a cover letter and current resume directly to each school. Please submit a separate cover letter for each school to which you wish to apply, clearly stating the position you are seeking in each cover letter. The personnel committee for each school will review cover letters and resumes and identify candidates for interviews. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by a representative of the school’s personnel committee directly.
Please note that if you are not a current New York City Department of Education employee, and are seeking employment for September, you must ALSO complete an online application at http://schools.nyc.gov/teachnyc/ in order to be considered for these schools as well as for any positions in the NYC Department of Education.
