Is LEAP the program for you?
  • Are you an assistant principal or teacher with a strong command of instruction and management?  
  • Have you been in the NYCDOE for at least three full years as a teacher, assistant principal or other applicable role?
  • Do you currently have a principal that has been in his or her position for at least four years and may be willing to serve as your mentor principal for a year?
  • Have you ever dreamt of becoming a principal for the NYCDOE, but you did not want to spend a year away from your home school in training?

If you have answered YES to the above questions, you might want to consider LEAP.

Strong evidence of student achievement and/or progress as demonstrated through the DOE's accountability tools: Quality Review, Progress Report, and NYC School Survey

Strong network and cluster recommendation

Completed at least three years in the principal role as of June 2013

Demonstrate strong evidence of successful school leadership over at least the past three years

Demonstrate capacity to serve as a mentor, share leadership responsibilities, and foster a school culture that supports leadership development

Commitment to attend approximately six meetings over the course of the 2013-14 school year

Be recommended highly by the school’s network team
Be a current NYCDOE employee

Completed at least three full years in the NYCDOE as a teacher, or other applicable role that meets State requirements for the principalship, as of June 2013. Note that applicants serving in a variety of roles are eligible to apply, including teacher, lead teacher, literacy/math coach, special education coordinator, guidance counselor, assistant principal

Have the potential to become a principal beginning in the 2014-15 school year

Hold a satisfactory rating

Have experience with leading teacher teams, including inquiry work, at the school level

Not be the recipient of negative findings in an NYC DOE investigation

Apprentice is willing to agree to time commitment of the program and attend all required classes and meetings

Must have a Master's Degree.
