Autism

District 75 instructs students with autism in classes throughout New York City. The mission of the Office of Autism is to ensure instructional practices that reflect the individual needs of students with autism, including those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and those with severe cognitive deficits are addressed. We accomplish our mission by providing training to staff to acquire and apply a deeper understanding of the “culture” of autism in order to proactively enhance student learning, communication, and independence, as well as to address challenging behaviors. Instructional strategies based on Applied Behavior Analysis (TEACCH, PECS, Verbal Behavior, prompt fading and Natural Environment Teaching)are utilized with an emphasis on student interests and strength.
