Literacy

Units of Study

The district literacy team supports the implementation of the Department of Education scope and sequence K–8, as well as the performance standards in English language arts, primary literacy standards (reading and writing grade by grade), balanced literacy initiatives and library programs. Additionally, members of the district literacy team coordinate and serve as liaisons to the district-, borough- and school-based literacy teams. Members of the district literacy team coordinate the annual district literacy fair.

In conjunction with the district assessment liaison, the district literacy team coordinates the implementation and scoring of state and city tests and assessments.

At the upper levels, our literacy department will be focusing on looking at literacy throughout the various content/academic areas. We will be focusing on the social-emotional aspect of teaching and learning as we help our community of diverse learners learn about themselves as learners and provide them with skills needed to learn at departmentalized settings such as our middle and high schools.
