The mission of the District 75 Counseling Office is to support the mental health needs of students using a multi-tiered framework and through directly providing individual and group counseling to our students as determined by their IEP mandates. Through the use of a Tiered Level of Service, the roles and responsibilities for clinicians and counselors vary according to needs of students. Beginning with Tier I, the universal level, counselors and clinicians collaborate with school professionals to create respectful, positive, and motivating environments in order to create a safe learning environment for students. This can include, but is not limited to, assistance with the implementation of school-wide programs and offering professional development to other school professionals on issues related to mental health. Additional topics Tier I options include: procedures for addressing behavioral problems, facilitation and participation in academic and behavioral committees as part of prevention measures, coordination of transition services and discharge, and continuous consultation with school staff to support instruction. Tier II services are for students in need of more support. At this level counselors and clinicians increase the frequency of consultation with teachers, parents, and other related service providers to identify academic and behavioral related issues impeding learning. They also, consult with parents regarding resources from the community, and participate in meetings to identify interventions applicable to student needs. Collaboration with outside agencies is ongoing to ensure consistency and continuity of services. When needed class-wide or small-group evidence-based interventions and programs may be implemented to address anger management, socialization, skill-building, self-regulation, and other self-management strategies. At the Tier III level services address the most challenging student behaviors and difficulties. Counselors and clinicians conduct and coordinate Functional Behavioral Assessments for students who demonstrate the need for additional behavioral support. They assist with the development, implementation, and progress monitoring of individualized behavioral programs, and consult with behavioral committees to review, interpret, and make decision according to direct and indirect data. Counselors and clinicians use evidence-based practices for intervening when students experience crises, assess for the maltreatment of children and report when outside agencies need to be contacted. They also, interview students to make determinations regarding sexual harassment and incidents of bullying according to Chancellor’s regulations, and identify contributory factors that lead to suicidal ideations and actions and determine when outside psychiatric or therapeutic services are warranted.
