My PC isn't detecting my handheld. How can I correct this?

  • If the handheld is in the cradle and you have a password enabled, enter your password.
  • Ensure that the handheld is properly connected to the cradle and the cradle is properly connected to the serial port.
  • To verify that the COM port is functioning properly, connect another serial device to it, such as a mouse.
  • Disable any synchronization programs such as HotSync, TrueSync, or ActiveSync. You will also need to temporarily disable any anti-virus software that is running. Contact your IT department to check if you are running any software that scans the COM ports. If you are, it should be disabled.
  • If you are using a laptop on a docking station, remove the laptop from the docking station.
  • Confirm that the port settings are correct. The standard port settings are:
    • Bits per second - 9600
    • Data Bits - 8
    • Parity - none
    • Flow Control - xon/xoff

  • In the desktop software, click Options>Serial Settings. Lower the serial speed to 9600.
    • For Windows 2000, click Start menu and go to Settings>Control Panel>System>Device Manager and open the COM port.
    • For Windows 95/98, click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Ports>Settings and open the COM port.

  • Ensure that the BlackBerry software versions on the desktop and handheld match.
    • On the handheld, scroll to Options>Status and click.
    • In the O/S field, you will find the version of your handheld's software.
    • Then, start the Desktop Manager and select Help>About.
    • The About Desktop Manager window appears. Check the version of the desktop software recorded there.

  • If the software versions don't match, start the Application Loader to update the handheld's software.
  • To isolate a cradle or port problem, try a different handheld in your cradle and a different cradle on your computer. Connect the cradle and handheld to a different computer.
