The Family English Initiative (FEI) is a family engagement pilot program featuring a two-generation approach to strengthening language skills. FEI targets K-2 English language learners (ELLs) and their parents to learn English as a family. By improving language skills, FEI helps families build the confidence, relationships, and tools needed to be active partners in their child’s education.
How The Family English Initiative Works
The Family English Initiative consists of three components: Family Literacy, Student Supplemental Instruction, and an Adult ESOL class. Parents of ELLs in grades K-2 will enroll in the program at their child’s school. The Family Literacy content will be in English and in their home language, focusing on effective strategies to support language acquisition in and out of school, and will include activities that promote multilingualism and a shared learning experience. Students and adults will then attend separate classes to further strengthen their English language skills. Free breakfast will be provided for families. Testing is required for placement in adult ESOL.
- Improve literacy and language skills for students and their families.
- Build the capacity of limited English proficient families to support learning at home.
- Create relationship-building opportunities for parents with limited English proficiency.
